Level 2 Surf Official Award

Overview

The Level 2 Surf Official Award is awarded to candidates that have demonstrated competency as an Arena Referee, Chief Judge or Stater (senior events), while effectively leading and managing a small group of officials during large regional or national surf sport events. 

This award further recognises the officials ability to make decisions and problem solve during an event, while competently using event management systems and procedures to deliver a safe and enjoyable event for athletes. 

The Level 2 Surf Official Award is recognition of an officials ability to competently lead and manage aspects of a surf sport event.


Course Information 

 Pre-requisites

Current member of a SLS club | 18 years of age  Surf Official Level 1 Award | Minimum 2 seasons officiating experience at level 1, and have officiated at at least one large regional event.

Training Type

A one day course (6 hrs + breaks) followed by at least 2 days practical experience including supervision and mentoring. 

Course Date/details

There is only one course offered each year, normally in Sept. The course location is dependent on where the majority of registrants reside. Travel subsidies are available for out of town registrants.

Course Facilitators

Delivered by trained and approved SLSNZ facilitators.

Who should attend

Those officials who are looking to step up into roles of Arena Referee, Chief Judge, Starter (senior events) or a more advanced officiating role, including assisting with leading and managing regional event. 

Award requirements

Completion of the one day Level 2 Surf Official course, + two days practical experience, along with a positive self and peer  performance review.

Outcomes

At the completion of this award officials will be able to:

  1. Identify and apply best practice for communicating decisions and dealing with feedback
  2. Identify and apply conflict management strategies
  3. Identify and apply risk assessment and management processes and procedures
  4. Perform a selected surf officials role involving leadership and management of other officials 
  5. Demonstrate sound knowledge of the rules and their application in surf sport events
