Official & Coach Development

From local surf carnivals to our National Championships, Lifesaving Sport needs great officials and coaches. Being a surf official or coach is a rewarding way to stay involved and contribute to the ongoing development of the sport, and to meet others who share a common passion for it.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) offers a range of surf official and coach development opportunities which are designed to meet the emerging needs of the sport and the expectations of our diverse pool of volunteer surf officials and coaches. Whether you're new to officiating and coaching or have many years experience, our surf official and coach development pathways provide opportunities for you to continue to learn and develop your skills for years to come. Thanks for your interest in being a surf official and/or coach - we look forward to having your aboard and seeing you out on the beach!

Officials Development Pathways

In the past, SLSNZ has relied solely on the delivery of courses by trained facilitators as the means to develop officials. Increasingly however, it is difficult to get groups of volunteers together for these courses. So, with the growing capability and accessibility of technology SLSNZ is moving towards expanding surf officials learning and development opportunities to include both 'online' and 'onsite' training options. This is a work in progress as SLSNZ partners with Sport NZ's Sport Tutor platform, while also developing capacity to provide onsite training opportunities.

Coaching is a rewarding way to contribute to your community, stay involved and give back to your surf club, and to meet others who share a common passion for our sport. As a coach, you help make Lifesaving Sport happen locally and succeed on the world stage. Whether you are new to coaching or have many years of experience, our courses will develop your skills, give you confidence and set you up to be a great coach at whatever level you choose.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) describes a process used to evaluate skills and knowledge gained outside the classroom. These skills and knowledge are then recognised against a set of standards or learning objectives. To be granted RPL, you need to collect and present evidence that clearly demonstrates you have met or exceeded the requirements of all the learning outcomes on the SLSNZ course or award. Click here for more information...
