The International Surf Rescue Challenge (ISRC) started as the Trans-Tasman Challenge, a traditional surf lifesaving competition between Australia and New Zealand that was first commenced in 1937. In 1999 South Africa was invited to compete and the Tri Nations Challenge was born.

In 2005 the Challenge was opened up to other Nations and the event was called the International Surf Rescue Challenge.

In 2025, New Zealand will host the ISRC at Mount Maunganui Main Beach.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) and Surf Life Saving Australia are bringing back Battle of the Tasman for 2025.

This year, each Nation will select three teams to develop the pathways in each country: Youth and two Pathways.

The teams will compete against each other in an exciting match racing format over three days. The first two days consist of pool events at Gold Coast Aquatic Centre. Athletes will then line up on the sand to complete an Ocean program.
