EVENT LIFEGUARD - INTRODUCTION MODULE
Course Overview
The Event Lifeguard - Introduction Module is an online course for any member wishing to develop their skills and knowledge in the Event Lifeguard space. This particularly module focuses on the role as a lifeguard on the shore, in the water or on a board during the many and wide ranging events Surf Life Saving members are involved with.
Course Information
Prerequisites:
- Current member of a SLS club
- Surf Lifeguard award (refreshed)
- Minimum Age 14
- For Events that require Lifeguards to be on a rescue board then the Board Rescue Module is a required prerequisite.
Duration: 20-30 minutes

Outcomes
At the completion of the online course candidates will be able to:
Health and Safety
- Describe what a hazard is and the risk associated with the hazard in a competition environment.
- Demonstrate how you would apply control measures to reduce risks at a competition.
- Describe and identify potential victim types during a competition.
- Identify what you need to bring to the competition as an event lifeguard?
Event Lifeguard Role
- Describe what your role is as an Event Lifeguard
- Describe appropriate ways of positioning and observing events as a lifeguard.
- Describe appropriate ways of positioning and observing events on a board.
- Describe how you might adapt your lifeguarding approach at a junior surf competition compared to an external event with adults.
- Overview on Missing person at sea Lifeguard roles and responsibilities (search methods and procedure).
Event Lifeguarding Planning
- Overview of the management hierarchy of a competition for internal events and external events.
- Overview of competition programmes and volunteer schedules.
EVENT LIFEGUARD - IRB CREWPERSON AWARD
Course Overview
The Event Lifeguard - IRB Crewperson Award is for any member wishing to develop their skills and knowledge as an Event Lifeguard IRB Crewperson and help keep members and public safe in competitions and activities. The course has been developed in three stages, Event Lifeguard IRB Crewperson Online Module, a one day practical course and a 2 day in competititon assessment period.

- Event Lifeguard Introduction Module
- IRB Crewperson Module
Duration:
- 30min online pre learning Module
- 6 hours practical course
- 2 days in competition assessment

Outcomes
At the completion of the online course candidates will be able to:
Health and Safety
- Complete an ORA for the practical training session.
Event Lifeguard IRB Crewperson
- Demonstrate how to recover someone into an IRB during an event.
- Demonstrate how to position someone in the IRB when rescued (single and multiple people) for safe transportation back to the beach.
- Demonstrate how to safely exit patients from the IRB.
- Demonstrate crewing procedures for IRB events, patient boats:
- Demonstrate standing in an IRB and scanning
Equipment
- Demonstrate knowledge and ability to set up a mushroom, rope, buoy.
- Demonstrate knowledge and ability to set up all parts of straddle line - bobble, anchor, anchor line, straddle, buoys.
- Can stow, deploy, tow and recover a mushroom safely.
- Can stow, deploy, tow and recover a straddle line safely.
- Demonstrate how to recover gear into an IRB during an event: (Ski, Board, Paddle, Oar, Tube)
- Demonstrate knowledge of the different colours of buoys and for what events they are used for.

The Event Lifeguard - IRB Driver Award is for any member wishing to develop their skills and knowledge as an Event Lifeguard IRB Driver and help keep members and public safe in competitions and activities. The course has been developed in three stages, Event Lifeguard IRB Driver Online Module, a one day practical course and a 4 day in competititon assessment period.

- Current member of a SLS Club
- Minimum Age 16
- Surf First Aid (Current)
- Surf Lifeguard award (refreshed)
- Event Lifeguard – IRB Crewperson
- IRB Drivers (refreshed)
- Recommended: Surf Official Level 1 Course
Duration:
- 30min online pre learning Module
- 6 hours practical course
- 4 days in competition assessment

Event Lifeguard IRB Driver Role
- Manoeuvre and position an IRB.

- Reverse effectively
- Use engine pulses
- Use reverse to stop the IRB in flat water or behind the break.
- Use engine pulses
- Stop an IRB and hold position for extended time periods in a break.
- Deploy and recover crewman in the surf zone.
- Demonstrate driver procedures for IRB events, patient boats.
- Demonstrate the IRB positioning when asked to observe course completion of athletes by the Arena Referee.
- Demonstrates effective manoeuvring and pick up of anyone needing assistance effectively.
Equipment
- Can stow, deploy, tow and recover a mushroom safely within and outside the Surf zone.
- Can stow, deploy, tow and recover a straddle line safely outside the surf zone.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand provides high quality Event Water Safety services for public events in, on or near water.
Our service includes:
- Advice to event organisers/managers
- Aquatic Safety Management Plan creation
- Sanctioning of Surf Life Saving Club to provided
- SLSNZ branded equipment and resources
- qualified and trained lifeguards.
