The Whakakatane Surf Lifesaving Club is based at Ohope Beach in the Bay of Plenty. In 2008 the Club celebrated its 75th Anniversary and today still is an integral part of the beach, Whakatane town and the district.

Ohope Beach is patrolled on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 24 November 2018 to 24 March 2019. Whakatane volunteer lifeguards patrol from 11:00am to 4:00pm on Saturdays and 10:00am to 5:00pm on Sundays from 24 November 2018 to 16 December 2019. Hours are increased to 10:00am to 5:00pm all weekend from 22 December 2018 to 24 February 2019. From 2 March 2019 to 24 March 2019 lifeguards patrol from 11:00am to 4:00pm on Saturdays and 10:00am to 5:00pm on Sundays.
A Regional Lifeguard Service operates from 10:00am to 6:00pm from 24 December to 25 January
