Injury Opens Door of Black Fins Opportunity for Nicol

The Black Fins have been forced into a late squad change ahead of their upcoming campaign, with Molly Shivnan withdrawing from the team due to injury.

Shivnan's withdrawal is a disappointing setback for the experienced athlete, who had been preparing to represent New Zealand at her third World Championships after months of commitment and preparation. The focus now turns to her recovery, with the Black Fins extending their support as she works through rehabilitation.

Stepping into the squad is Pippa Nicol, who brings valuable international experience to the team. Late last year, Nicol was part of the New Zealand team that secured a historic victory at the German Cup, marking the first time New Zealand had claimed the title. Her performances throughout that campaign highlighted her ability to contribute in a high-performance team environment as she looks to make her Black Fins World Championships debut.

Black Fins Campaign Lead Steve Kent said Nicols’ selection was a testament to both her development as an athlete and the effectiveness of New Zealand’s high-performance pathway.

“Pippa’s selection reflects both her individual growth and the strength of our athlete pathway. After playing a key role in New Zealand’s first-ever German Cup victory, this is a well-deserved opportunity for her to make her Black Fins World Championships debut.”

While Molly focuses on her recovery, the Black Fins know she will remain a strong supporter of the team. The squad wishes her all the best for a full return to the sport and looks forward to welcoming Pippa into the environment as preparations continue for the campaign ahead.
