SLSNZ and SLSA strengthen trans-Tasman ties through the signing of a Strategic Partnership Agreement
Saturday, 25 April 2026Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) and Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) have today reaffirmed their close and enduring relationship, signing a Strategic Partnership Agreement that further strengthens ties between the two countries across governance, lifesaving, sport, education, leadership, and international engagement.
The agreement marks an important step in strengthening trans-Tasman collaboration and reflects the long history and special association between New Zealand and Australia, underpinned for over 100 years by the ANZAC spirit. Both organisations recognise the depth of their connection and the important role this plays in advancing surf lifesaving outcomes.
At its core, the agreement is grounded in the shared mission to save lives, prevent drowning, and improve coastal safety outcomes. It also aims to further promote surf lifesaving sport and high-performance pathways, enhance member experience and leadership capability, and strengthen the long-term sustainability and reputation of surf lifesaving both at home and internationally.
President of SLSA, Peter Agnew AM ESM, said the agreement builds on a strong foundation of collaboration and shared purpose.
“We enjoy a close friendship and association with SLSNZ, built on collaboration, shared heritage and experiences, and a common vision for drowning prevention and water safety. This agreement further strengthens our collaboration across a broad range of areas,” Mr Agnew said.
“We are stronger together and this agreement ensures both organisations are well positioned to meet further challenges and opportunities in lifesaving and water safety. It encourages the open exchange of ideas and innovation, as we support each other to deliver on our strategic objectives, whilst enhancing leadership and effectiveness across the Asia-Pacific region and globally,” he said.
SLSNZ Board Chair, Kelvyn Eglinton, spoke of the significance of the partnership saying:
“Surf lifesaving has always been strongest when people come together in service of others. This agreement captures that spirit, ensuring SLSNZ and SLSA continue to collaborate on the challenges ahead, from coastal safety and emergency response to member experience and international leadership.
"It's a privilege for us to partner with SLSA, and it's befitting to announce this on ANZAC Day, as this will be another great chapter in what has been an incredible ANZAC story for over 100 years."
