Successful Joint Search and Rescue Exercise at Anawhata Beach
Tuesday, 4 March 2025In a coordinated effort, Bethells Beach Surf Lifesaving Patrol, Hato Hone St John Ambulance, and Piha Volunteer Fire and Emergency (FENZ) conducted a joint search and rescue exercise (SAREx) at Anawhata Beach. The exercise, held at the north end of Anawhata, simulated the rescue of three individuals who were rock fishing and hit by a wave, resulting in one person being washed into the water and two others sustaining injuries.
The multi-patient rescue scenario required navigating around rocks, large surf, and managing limited radio communication. Lifeguards demonstrated effective rock rescues, first aid/resuscitation skills, and the utilisation of RWC and IRB, showcasing effective interagency teamwork and communication.
The Bethells Beach SAR squad found the SAREx to be “an invaluable opportunity to fine-tune their search and rescue skills” and praised the collaboration with emergency services.
The remote location and limited communication coverage necessitated mutual support among the agencies for a successful outcome.
The exercise concluded with the successful transport of all three patients from the incident location to the beach. Surf Lifeguards provided in-water search and support, as well as initial first aid on the rocks, until Piha Volunteer Fire, St John Piha First Response Unit, and St John SERT were able to access the scene to provide advanced support to move the patients to safety.
