Oceans: Festival of Junior Lifesaving Triumphs Despite Weather Challenges

Tuesday, 27 February 2024

Despite a wet and windy start, organisers of the country’s largest junior lifesaving carnival are calling this year’s event a resounding success.

Held in Mount Maunganui from 22 – 25 February, Oceans: Festival of Junior Lifesaving saw over 700 junior members from 44 Surf Life Saving clubs compete in a range of events, including Sprint Race, Surf Race, Board Race, and Run-Swim-Run.

Matt Cairns, SLSNZ National Events Manager, said, “The weather threw a few curveballs at us on day one, which saw us move arenas.  Despite this, the kids gave it their all, showing true determination and resilience.  We witnessed some great racing, inspiring teamwork, and had plenty of people down at the beach supporting them.”

While juniors did compete for medals in races, the primary goal of the event was participation.

Cairns said, “In 2022, Surf Life Saving New Zealand joined other national sporting organisations in supporting and working towards Sport New Zealand’s ‘Balance is Better’ principles, which aim to ensure young people develop a lifelong love of sport and recreation.  At its core, Oceans is about having fun, being part of a team, facing challenges, and fostering friendships.

“It’s also about creating a strong Surf Life Saving movement and developing surf lifeguards for the future.  Judging by what we saw over the four days at Oceans, beachgoers can be reassured that their safety is in good hands.  It’s obvious we have incredible junior members, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.”

The event wouldn’t have been made possible without the support of local event partners, especially Tauranga City Council and the Tauranga Western Bay community Event Fund.

Cairns said, “Mount Maunganui is an incredible location to hold Oceans: Festival of Junior Lifesaving, and Tauranga City Council are fantastic hosts.  Dealing with Mother Nature can be challenging when organising such a large-scale event, but they make it easy and always welcome our community with open arms.

“We must also thank all the parents, coaches and volunteers who are the driving force behind the event.  Their commitment in ensuring everything ran smoothly was invaluable and they created a fantastic environment for the juniors to compete in.”

SLSNZ would like to thank the following event partners who make Oceans: Festival of Junior Lifesaving possible: Tauranga City Council, Tauranga Western Bay Community Event Fund, Race One Surf Craft, Sonic Surf Craft, Just Sheds, PTS Logistics, Brandt, and McLeod Cranes, Hiab and Transport Services.
