Fergus Eadie Breaks Records During Incredible European Pool Rescue Campaign

Thursday, 7 December 2023

One of New Zealand’s top lifesaving pool athletes has added more New Zealand records to his list following a successful trip to Europe.

Fergus Eadie, from Auckland’s Mairangi Bay Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), was part of the Black Fins squad who came second at the International German Cup in Warendorf, Germany.

While the rest of the squad returned home, Eadie stayed on for the Orange Cup which was held in Eindhoven, the Netherlands from 1 – 3 December.

Eadie said, “Competing at the Orange Cup was a way to get some more international pool racing experience.  My results show I’m progressing toward where I want to be for for the Lifesaving World Championships on the Gold Coast in Australia next August.”

During the Orange Cup, Eadie surpassed his previous achievements set at the German Cup by re-breaking two New Zealand records in the 100-metre tow with fins and the 50-metre manikin carry.  He also set a New Zealand record in the 100-metre manikin carry.

Steve Kent, SLSNZ Black Fins Campaign Lead, said, “Fergus did incredibly well in Eindhoven, especially competing solo without the team or a coach poolside. He set some incredible times and now holds a total of four New Zealand records across six individual events in pool rescue.”

Despite competing solo, Eadie received valuable support from coach Michael Weston of Coast Swimming Club, along with help from Mairangi Bay SLSC coach Tom Lowe who honed his pool rescue-specific skills.

Along with setting New Zealand records, Eadie has become the first Kiwi to complete the rescue medley in under 60 seconds, followed by an impressive sub-59-second swim just a week later.  He was also the first New Zealander to swim the 100-metre tow with fins under 50 seconds and the first to complete the 50-metre manikin carry under 28 seconds.

His record-breaking performances setting the stage for an exciting 2024 season.
