Surf Life Saving NZ Acknowledges Fatality at Langs Beach, Northland

On the 28th of January 2022, Lifeguards from Waipu Cove were notified by SurfCom of an incident at nearby Langs Beach. The Lifeguards responded in an IRB and assisted with moving a patient to a safe location and providing CPR. Surf Life Saving extends our condolences to the family and loved ones of the man who died. We also thank the Lifeguards, St John, NZ Fire and Emergency and Helimed staff involved.

Surf Life Saving NZ supports collaboration between Water Safety & Public Sector as concerning findings from the 2020-2021 Beach and Coast Safety Report are announced

The 2020-21 Beach & Coastal Safety Report reveals concerning findings as New Zealand finds itself amid an appalling summer for fatal drownings. Data from the 2020-21 Beach & Coastal Safety Report shows that New Zealand has a 44% higher ten-year average beach and coastal fatal drowning rate per capita (per 100,000 pop.) than Australia. This is a hugely concerning statistic and as a coastal nation, Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) believes we need to do far better.

'Cullen patrol': Never a dull day for family of Canterbury lifesavers

The Cullen family are well known in surf lifesaving circles. Kirsty Cullen has been a member of the New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club for a decade and is yet to face a dull day. Since joining she has tried her hand at several different roles, helped more than 20 people to become lifeguards and won two awards for her efforts. Kirsty, who has lived in Rolleston for the past 20 years joined the club along with her husband Andy and two daughters Ashley and Phie in 2012 in a bid to give her girls more knowledge on safety in the water as they were learning to surf.

SLSNZ’s elite lifeguards prepare to level up at National Lifeguard School

A group of Kiwi heroes already dedicated to saving lives are about to become even more super, when they hit the beaches in a couple of weeks for this season’s National Lifeguard School. This training will upskill them to Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s highest lifeguard qualification – The Advanced Lifeguard Award.
