Search & Rescue Summit set to stage major maritime Search & Rescue exercises in Dunedin

Search and Rescue (SAR) Organisations around the country will be converging at Dunedin from the 13th -15th of May for the Surf Lifesaving New Zealand (SLSNZ) Search and Rescue Summit. Over 20 SLSNZ top SAR Coordinators and Senior Surf Lifesaving SAR Squad team members will attend the Summit, which will also host other SAR Agency teams from LandSAR, Coastguard, and Otago Rescue Helicopter and Fire and Emergency.

Winners of the SLSNZ Otago/Southland Awards of Excellence Announced

The Otago/Southland's Local Awards of Excellence recognise the contribution of the dedicated volunteer Surf Lifeguards, coaches, instructors, and athletes during the 2021-2022 season. The awards honour the volunteers who have devoted numerous hours to keeping our beaches and people safe and Lifesaving Sport athletes who have shone in competition.

Belinda Slement, ‘super mum’ of Wainui Surf Lifesaving Club

Belinda Slement grew up directly across the road from the Wainui Surf Lifesaving Club. She qualified as a lifeguard in 1998 and then moved on to the role of advanced lifeguard. While still in her early 20s, she was the first to arrive at an incident that saw her resuscitate a three-year-old boy. Belinda received Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s (SLSNZ) Rescue of the Year Award for this lifesaving act.
