For the past two years, the annual Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) Awards of Excellence event has been cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions. Finally, the shining stars of Lifeguarding and Surf Lifesaving Sport were able to gather once again, to be recognised for their outstanding efforts and achievements. The prestigious Awards event took place on Saturday 21st May at Te Papa in Wellington.

The Surf Life Saving New Zealand Awards of Excellence recognise volunteers who dedicate many hours to being on patrol, those that keep clubs running behind the scenes, and lifesaving sport athletes who have shone in competition. The Awards are held every year in each Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) region to recognise and celebrate the many club members putting in considerable time, effort and skills at a grass-roots level to make sure Kiwis who head to the beach get home safe. In the Central Region, the local awards acknowledge the achievements of those in the Capital Coast, Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki.

The New Zealand Search and Rescue (NZSAR) awards are presented annually in recognition of outstanding achievements within New Zealand’s search and rescue region, which covers 30 million square kilometres. The 2022 NZSAR Awards took place at Government House on Tuesday 17 May. Surf Lifesaving’s SAR capability has been recognised this year, with three separate Certificates of Achievement going to clubs and members. Alan Mundy, Surf Life Saving New Zealand National Search and Rescue Manager says, “It’s fantastic to see our SAR squads and people being acknowledged at the NZSAR Awards. This is an area that has seen a lot of growth and development”. He adds, “Over the past 10 years there has been a significant increase in Surf Lifesaving Search and Rescue operations, with more lives being saved and more people being rescued than ever before”.
