Hauturu, or Clark Island, is accessible by wading at low tide and is popular in summer months for rock-pool fossickers and kayakers. Two Whangamata Lifeguards, Jules & Dominic, were setting up an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) training arena when a member of the public approached them and advised that two men were attempting to walk across to Clark Island and appeared to have taken the wrong path and were have trouble making the crossing.

Piha SLSC Awarded 1st Place for February '22 bp Rescue of the Month

On the 20th of February, the forecast for Piha was for a long period of swell doubling in height through the morning. This resulted in developing and challenging surf conditions. Five Piha SLSC Lifeguards from the Active Reserve Patrol, which is made up of older and experienced members, took advantage of the situation to undertake an informal training swim late in the morning.

The awards honour the volunteers who have devoted numerous hours to keeping our beaches and people safe and Lifesaving Sport athletes who have shone in competition.

Dedicated volunteer Surf Lifeguards, coaches, instructors, and athletes have been celebrated at the Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s Canterbury Awards of Excellence. The awards honour the volunteers who have devoted numerous hours to keeping our beaches and people safe and Lifesaving Sport athletes who have shone in competition.   Stu Bryce, Surf Life Saving New Zealand Southern Region Manager says, “The Canterbury Awards of Excellence was a great night recognising and celebrating all our volunteers from throughout the region who have gone above and beyond to continue to provide club and regional programmes in what has been a massive season.”

Dedicated volunteer Surf Lifeguards, coaches, instructors, and athletes have been celebrated at the Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s Taranaki Awards of Excellence.  The awards honour the volunteers who have devoted numerous hours to keeping our beaches and people safe and lifesaving sport athletes who have shone in competition. Volunteers from Surf Life Saving Clubs at Wanganui, New Plymouth Old Boys, Fitzroy, Opunake and East End make up the Taranaki region.
