Ōtaki Surf Life Saving Club wins Te Tohu Tiketike o Matariki Award

The New Zealand Amateur Sport Association Inc. is pleased to announce that the inaugural Te Tohu Tiketike o Matariki award has been won by Ōtaki Surf Life Saving Club Inc. (OSLSC). The winner of the inaugural award was announced today by Association Patron, Andy Leslie, MNZM who convened the judging panel. The award, decided in collaboration with Te Upoko o te Ika, Aotearoa’s first te reo Māori radio station, acknowledges a community sport organisation who has embraced te reo Māori as part of its kaupapa. The award also acknowledges National Volunteer Week (Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu), with the winner reliant on volunteers to deliver competitive sport and lifeguard services to its local community.

Otago SAR Squad Awarded 3rd Place for March '22 bp Rescue of the Month

One evening on St Kilda Beach, Dunedin's most dangerous beach, conditions were dangerous with 1.5m surf and extreme rips and holes present. Edward Priest, a University of Otago student and Lifeguard at Sumner Beach in Christchurch happened to be at the beach with his mates.   Edward spotted some people getting dragged out in a rip and his Lifeguard training and instincts kicked into action. He responded by grabbing a stranger’s surfboard and paddling out with another surfer to keep the people in the rip afloat.

Waipū Cove SLSC Awarded 2nd Place for March '22 bp Rescue of the Month

On the 5th of March, after a big day hosting and competing in the Northern Region IRB Champs, patrols had finished. But volunteer Lifeguards Jake, Tim and Kath were still at the club helping someone with last-minute first aid practice for the lifeguard exam the next day.  The team was alerted by a Junior Surf parent who had driven past someone lying nearby on the roadside who looked unwell. The Lifeguards were told it appeared someone was checking for a pulse and asked if they had a defibrillator. The three responded immediately with radios, oxygen kit, (AED) and first aid bag.

Muriwai VLS Awarded 1st Place for March '22 bp Rescue of the Month

An off-duty Muriwai Seach and Rescue Squad (SAR) member had just finished surfing when he saw a skydiver drifting out to sea while other parachutists landed on the beach. The Lifeguard immediately commenced a SAR Squad response, collected his lifeguard/SAR equipment and raced to the surf club with another local SAR Squad member who he’d been surfing with.

St Kilda SLSC Awarded 3rd Place for February '22 bp Rescue of the Month

St Kilda volunteer Lifeguard, Rob Ratten had just finished eating his lunch outside the surf club and was about to leave the beach, but he could see two people coming close to the rip and decided to keep an eye on them.   That day there was no patrol on duty and no flags on the beach. There were two large strong rips right in front of the surf club which is where the people had chosen to swim. Surf conditions were around 1m, choppy with light winds and two large strong rips were working next to each other.
