On the 29th December 2021, the Police advised lifeguards from the Omanu Beach SLSC of a mass rescue unfolding 2km down the beach.

Lifeguards responded in the ATV, arriving to find that surfers had pulled four swimmers from the water. One person was unresponsive and CPR was started by lifeguards and an off-duty nurse and paramedic. St John’s Ambulance, Police, and Fire and Emergency arrive and took over CPR, but tragically the man could not be revived.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the man who died.

We would also like to thank the lifeguards, emergency services, surfers and the off-duty nurse and paramedic who were involved.
