Surf Life Saving NZ Acknowledges Fatality at Ahimate Beach, Manawatu River, Palmerston North

On the 2nd January 2022, the Tararua Search and Rescue Squad were tasked by the Police to assist with the recovery of two people at the Manawatu River.

Lifeguards assisted with locating and recovering one man using two Inflatable Rescue Boats and guards diving in the water.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand would like to offer our sincere condolences to the loved ones of two people who died in this river on this day. Our hearts go out to you at this distressing time.

We also thank the lifeguards, Police, Fire and Emergency NZ, Palmerston North REST team and Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter who were involved.
