Surf Life Saving NZ Acknowledges Fatality at Ahimate Beach, Manawatu River, Palmerston North

The Tararua Search and Rescue Squad were involved in the recovery of a child and woman who went missing in the Manawatu River on the 29th of December, 2021.

The Surf Life Saving IRB crew worked with the Police National Dive Squad for three days to locate and recover the missing persons.

The loss of two people at the river is a tragedy, and our thoughts go out to the bereaved at this incredibly sad time.

We would also like to acknowledge the work of the lifeguards, Police, Fire and Emergency NZ Palmerston North REST team, Hawkes Bay Rescue Helicopter, a private helicopter company and local kayak club. Their combined efforts brought the people who died back to their loved ones so they could say their farewells.
