Friday, 1 April 2022

Waihi Beach will be hosting another exciting Surf Lifesaving competition this weekend. This time the Rookies will be in action for the 2022 Eastern Regional Rookie Championships taking place on Saturday 2nd of April.

The Rookie Competition aims to demonstrate how Rookies work as a team and as individuals in performing the skills associated with surf rescue patrol work. The Eastern Regional Rookie Championships will include several physical skills, practical and theory tasks involving racing, rescue and first aid situations.

Eight teams and 40 competitors from Papamoa SLSC, Omanu SLSC, MMLS, Waihi LGS and HWB SLSC will be putting their training into practice in the joint Rookie Teams and Top Rookie Competition.

Poppy Crouch, SLSNZ Coromandel Club Development Officer says, “The Rookie Championships is a fantastic event that really tests what our Rookies have learnt about the core elements of surf lifesaving. It not only requires them to demonstrate their rescue skills in the water but they must also show their understanding of theory and first aid, all in a competitive environment.”

Talia Comp, SLSNZ Bay of Plenty Club Development Officer adds, “The Eastern Region Rookie Championships enables our top under-14 Rookies to test their skills against the best in the region. We’re looking forward to seeing some strong competition and know the teams and individuals will give it their all for the tasks, races and theory tests.”

The Eastern Region Rookie Championships take place with the backing of Zespri. Avan Polo, Eastern Region Manager at Surf Life Saving New Zealand says, “Following a tricky season for Surf Lifesaving events due to Covid-19 we’re delighted that the Eastern Region Rookie Championships is going ahead and would like to thank Zespri for their generous support. Events like this help us keep young people engaged in developing the vital lifeguarding skills to keep our communities safe.”
