2021 sees six new inductees to Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s Sport Hall of Fame

The Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLNZ) Sport Hall of Fame was established in 1990 with 15 people inducted. The second induction happened five years later in 1995, with the third taking place in 2007. The Hall of Fame acknowledges outstanding competitive surf sport performances by members of the organisation to remember their accomplishments and serve as inspiration for others. 2021 has proved to be an exceptional year with six new inductees taking well-deserved places in the SLSNZ Sport Hall of Fame.

Emily B Drifter Project awarded Surf Life Saving New Zealand Innovation of The Year

Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) celebrates the dedicated surf lifeguards and club members across the country with the 2021 National Awards of Excellence. This year, the prestigious DHL Innovation of the Year Award goes to the Emily B Drifter project, developed by members of the Kotuku Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC).

A daring rescue wins the Taranaki Search and Rescue Squad the bp Rescue of the Year Award

Parakai rock sits off Back Beach near Port Taranaki. It’s a popular spot with an alluring lagoon, but if you don’t keep a close eye on the incoming tide, getting trapped there is a real possibility. On January 5th, 2021, Taranaki Search and Rescue (SAR) Squad coordinator David Bentley received a call from the local Police Search and Rescue team. A group of four teenage girls had become stranded.

DHL Volunteer of the Year, Joanne Hobson, wants other surf lifesaving volunteers to know the importance of their contribution

Surf Lifesaving New Zealand (SLSNZ) depends on its 4,500+ Surf Lifeguard volunteers across the country. Without these volunteers, the work necessary to help improve water safety and get people home safely from the beach simply wouldn’t get done.

Phoebe Havill makes waves in the world of lifeguarding, receiving the NZ Lottery Grants Board Lifeguard of the Year Award

Phoebe Havill is a gifted leader and lifeguard and only the second woman to receive the prestigious NZ Lottery Grants Board Lifeguard of the Year Award. She received this accolade at the Surf Lifesaving New Zealand (SLSNZ) 2021 National Awards of Excellence. Adding to this already impressive achievement, Phoebe also collected the DHL Instructor of the Year Award this year.
