On the 16th of November 2021, volunteer Surf Lifeguards were tasked to search for an adult male who was swept out to sea whilst swimming with friends, shortly before 3.40pm.
Lifeguards from Bethells Search & Rescue Squad searched the water in two Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs), and the Police Eagle Helicopter searched from above. The man was recovered from the water and brought back to the beach where CPR was commenced, but sadly he died.
This tragic incident occurred outside of patrol hours.
Our thoughts & sincere condolences are with the man’s family & friends at this incredibly difficult time.
Surf Life Saving NZ thanks the volunteer Surf Lifeguards from Bethells Beach, the Eagle Helicopter crew and emergency services.
