Surf Lifeguards assisted in the attempted resuscitation of an adult male at Pilot Bay in Mt Maunganui on February 13, 2021.

At 2:15pm, members of the public alerted nearby Mt Maunganui Lifeguard Service patrol members that a man had been pulled from the water at Pilot Bay and was in need of urgent medical assistance. Five Surf Lifeguards attended the scene and assisted with CPR and crowd control. Sadly, the patient was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand would like to thank the Mt Maunganui Volunteer Surf Lifeguards, members of the public and emergency service personnel involved in the incident.

This fatality occurred at a non-lifeguarded beach. The death will be referred to the Coroner and Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s Coastal Safety team will work with emergency services to establish the circumstances.
