Surf Life Saving New Zealand recognises death at Baylys Beach, Kaipara
Friday, 21 February 2020On February 20, 2020, at around 5.45pm, Police received a report of a drowning incident at Baylys Beach, Kaipara.
A woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition and another person had minor injuries.
Police say the woman died in the early hours of the following day (February 21).
The woman got into trouble when she went to the aid of her child who was struggling in the water, Police say. Her child received minor injuries.
Baylys Beach is a seasonally lifeguarded beach and the incident happened outside of patrol hours.
Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this time.
Surf Life Saving would like to acknowledge the emergency services who attended.
The incident is being handled by the police and the death will be referred to the Coroner. Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s Coastal Safety Team will also work with emergency services to establish the circumstances.
