SLSNZ High Performance Camp – December 12-13th 2020

The HP Camp, held at HungaHungatoroa Marae in Tauranga, marked the beginning of a new journey within the SLSNZ High Performance Programmes. For the first time, IRB, ocean, pool rescue, beach, open and youth athletes (28 athletes) all came together for a camp focused on building culture and connecting after what has been a very challenging year.

The HP Programmes have made some significant changes this year, shifting to development of an ‘HP system’ that will continue to enable a focus on performance preparation, but also the ability to develop our athletes, coaches, managers and support people. The HP camp brought everyone together in order to begin to highlight the benefits of a collaborative approach.

After receiving a special welcome on to the Marae, we spent time talking and learning about the ONE, the brand developed by the Black Fins group in 2012 representing the strong values and culture around people and performance.

Former Black Fins Head Coaches Jason Pocock and Scott Bartlett shared their stories about how the ONE came about and how ‘living it’ impacted on the journey to World Championship campaigns since its inception.

Stories from athletes within the group also highlighted the benefits of sharing ideas, experiences and building on the ONE as we move forward

Unfortunately we had a number of athletes unable to attend the camp due to other competitions or being based in Australia, or both. A few athletes were able to dial in for some of the camp for some activities. It is certainly the intention moving forward that we will hold a full HP squad camp each year where we continue to build on the culture and connections across the disciplines, including surf boats.

Thanks to all the coaches, managers and support team for pulling the camp together.

Also thanks for the cool kit @under_armour_nz and @hpsnz for your support!
