Award nomination for SLSNZ Eastern Regional Championships

A team effort from a “phenomenal amount of people” is being praised after the SLSNZ Eastern Regional Championships was named a finalist for a prestigious award.

Sport Gisborne Tairāwhiti’s awards evening, the Bronwyn Kay Agency Sporting Excellence Awards 2019, is being held on November 8 and the SLSNZ Eastern Regional Championships is a contender in the Event Excellence category.

Eastern Region Sport Manager Mark Inglis was the event manager for the championships and says its success was thanks to “a phenomenal amount of people being involved and the combined efforts of local clubs and personnel to pull it off”.

The 3 day event, held at Midway Beach in January, attracted 590 competitors and is seen as the pinnacle regional event for volunteer Surf Lifeguards in the Eastern Region (Coromandel to Gisborne), while also attracting competitors from across the country.

It showcased the fitness and lifesaving skill level of the athletes and was live streamed and viewed by more than 5,800 people – therefore promoting the sport of Surf Lifesaving, as well as the Gisborne Tairāwhiti area.

“Being a finalist reflects positively on the contribution and hard work put in by all the local volunteers and the relationship established with Matt Cairns, his team and major sponsor Tairāwhiti Gisborne.”

Mr Inglis says Trust Tairāwhiti’s support ensured the event ran smoothly for participants and viewers.

Trust Tairāwhiti General Manager Tourism Adam Hughes says being involved as a win-win for everyone involved.

“We supported this event because it brings a lot of competitors and supporters to Tairāwhiti. Our local clubs are also strongly represented and it’s a healthy, community focussed event.

“Our team worked with Mark and SLSNZ Eastern Region to try a few different things that would better connect our local communities and visitors with the event. New initiatives included a social media campaign, event giveaways, live streaming, and grandstands at the event,” Mr Hughes says.

“We were really pleased with the exposure for Tairāwhiti Gisborne as a destination. The event team were more than happy to collaborate and try things with us and we look forward to more large scale surf events in Tairāwhiti.”

The Bronwyn Kay Agency Sporting Excellence Awards is a prestigious event that acknowledges the sporting achievements by the Trust Tairāwhiti community over the last 12 months.
