St Clair SLSC reclaim Southern Regional Champs title

Monday, 27 February 2017

St Clair SLSC athletes put on some top performances over the weekend to regain the overall Southern Regional Championship title.

The weekend saw around 240 athletes contest over 100 events at the largest of the South Island's senior surf competitions at New Brighton Beach in Christchurch.

The event has a proud history, attracting more than just regional athletes. This year's competitors came from as far North as Red Beach on Auckland's North Shore, Tauranga's Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service and Napier's Westshore SLSC .

Last year's result was flipped with South Brighton taking out second place behind St Clair.  Brighton from Dunedin had some great results and had their best year to date at the event with a strong showing in third place, closely followed by Spencer Park and Taylors Mistake in fourth and fifth respectively

Southern Region Sport Manager Scotty Roberts says "the event was held in stunning weather and surf conditions on Saturday followed by wet and testing conditions on Sunday.  The full range of conditions to the event's success."

"The Southern Regional Champs is always a major event as it's only a month away from the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships that are being held at New Brighton Beach, Christchurch for the first time since 2004. Athletes are not only competing for regional honours, but they are using the event as an ideal competitive warm-up to the Nationals." he says.
