Tuesday, 15 August 2017

The Mairangi Bay, Orewa and Red Beach Surf Life Saving Clubs took out the Lion's share of the Awards at the 2017 Surf Life Saving Northern Region Awards of Excellence held at Shed 10 on 12 August.

On a night when the Region's 17 clubs gathered to celebrate the achievements of the 2016-17 season, the Toyota Financial Services-sponsored Awards recognised the best in 35 categories as well as honouring the service contribution of 25 members.

Yamaha Club of the Year along with the award for Best Patrolled Beach went to Orewa, which also picked up competition trophies for the Northern Region Championships, Senior Competition Club of the Year and the Pool Championships as well as individual awards for Under-16 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year (Hamish Lockie and Lucy Makaea) and Examiner of the Year (Faron Turner) - eight awards in total. Orewa stalwart John Chapman was also honoured with a Life Membership.

Rescue of the Year was awarded to the lifeguards from Kariaotahi SLSC for their efforts on 30 January this year when they were involved in a surf rescue, an extensive search for two missing swimmers, and a motorcycle accident in a short space of time after the patrols had officially finished at 6pm.

The Lifeguard of the Year trophy went to Ollie Irwin (Bethells Beach Surf Life Saving Patrol) for the second year in a row, while Raglan Surf Life Saving Club's Mark Shrimpton was named Regional Lifeguard of the Year and clubmate Sam Cron won the Under-19 Lifeguard of the Year award. Rookie Lifeguard of the Year was Joshua Baker of Waipu Cove Surf Life Saving Club.
