Mount lead after first day of 2016 national pool champs

The 2016 New Zealand Pool Championships started off strong today with a total of 24 New Zealand records broken on the first day of the championships.

Seven different events were contested across two solid sessions of racing.

Day one in the pool saw the Junior's Swim with Fins, 4x25m Brick Relay and 50m Rescue Medleys taking place in the morning with the Under 16, Under 19, Open and Masters 50m Swim with Fins, 4x25m Manikin Relay, 4x50m Medley Relay and 100m Manikin Carry with Fins in the afternoon.

At the end of Day One, Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service finished top of the club points table with 74 points, followed by Orewa with 46 points and Mairangi Bay in third on 37 points.

This year's national pool championships, taking place at the Sir Owen G. Glenn National Aquatic Centre at AUT Millennium in Auckland, is the largest yet with 603 competitors taking part.

Racing begins again from 9am tomorrow morning with the event finishing up on Sunday afternoon.
