The Surf Boat season is set to begin this weekend with the first round of the New Zealand Surf Boat Series.
The Titahi Bay Classic will see 35 crews taking part in the event across Saturday and Sunday.
Events will include Masters Men and Women, Open Men and Women's, Under 23 Men and Women and Under 19 Men and Women's Long Course plus a Surf Boat relay which must include one male and one female crew member from any age grade plus an under 19 crew member.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand Sport Manager Mike Lord says the first event of the season is always an exciting one and the weather looks to be fine; making for some favourable conditions for the crews.
"The Surf Boat Series is always an exciting few months of racing and this year's series is set to be a great one, he says.
"The Open Men's crew from North Beach in Christchurch will be the ones to watch as they took out the overall series win last year and have been selected to represent New Zealand at the Trans-Tasman Challenge in February, so they'll be wanting to prove their selection there."
Round Two of the series, the Whangamata Surf Boat Spectacular, will take place on January 2 followed by the North Island Surf Boat Championships at Waihi Beach on February 4-5 which will also host the biannual Trans-Tasman Challenge, New Zealand Representative Surf Boat Challenge and Champion of Champions surf boat events.
The fourth and final round will be the Piha Big Wave 'Day of Giants' on February 18.
