Eastern Region gears up for regional champs

Thursday, 22 December 2016

The Eastern Region Championships (ERCs) has a proud history of being not only one of the biggest surf lifesaving carnivals in the country, but also one of the most competitive- and 2017 won't disappoint.

The annual event draws in some of the top athletes from around New Zealand, making it one of the most exciting events on the Surf Sports calendar and this season will see a new format introduced.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand Eastern Region Sport Manager Mark Inglis says a twilight event is being introduced on the Saturday night from 5pm to 8.30pm for the beach events.

"It's an exciting new initiative which will hopefully speed up the large programme and result in less conflict of events across the weekend," he says.

The 2017 Eastern Region Championships will take place from January 28-29 at Mount Maunganui.

Events include Beach Sprint, Beach Flags, Run Swim Run, Surf Race, Board Race, Ski Race, Diamond Race, Ironman, 2km Beach Run, Beach, Board and Ski Relays, Board rescue, Taplin and Short and Long Course Surf Boats and Canoes.

Mr Inglis says the Eastern Region Championships offers almost all of the events of the New Zealand Championships that takes place in March.

"So, for many of the athletes, it's a great opportunity to have a good hit out and test the top competition before then," he says.

Entries are open now and will close on January 11.
