Whangamata Surf Boat Spectacular results
Monday, 5 January 2015It was all go at Whangamata over the weekend with around 50 crews taking part in the second round of the New Zealand Surf Boat Series; the Whangamata Surf Boat Spectacular.
Red Beach Surf Life Saving Club finished on top of the club points table with some impressive wins in the women's divisions. The Sirens, with a crew of Kelly Andrew, Katrina Gouldstone, Ashleigh Jenkins, Madison Smith, Zita Talaic-Burgess and sweep Shane O'Halloran, took out the Open Women's event and the Giggles, with a crew of Rebecca Ash, Jaime Busby, Jasmine Cornish, Kelly Dillon and sweep Craig Dillon, taking out the Under 23 Women's event.
The wins didn't stop there with Blakey's Angels (Jessica Cornish, Georgia Cox, Tyler McDowall, Briana Smith and sweep Craig Dillon) winning the Women's Under 19 event.
Over in the Men's division, Piha produced a dominant performance to win the Open Men's event with a crew including Mark Bourneville, Paul Gerritsen, Ben Richards, Ben Scott and Jean-Paul Smit. The Omanu Beach Crackins came in second with the Mairangi Bay Merkins in third.
Rarangi took gold in the Under 23 Men's race with a crew of Michael Boon, Matt Jackson, Joseph Leper, Keagen John Saul and Neil Watts. Waihi took second with the Red Beach Pirates in third.
Over in the Under 19 Men's, it was hosts Whangamata that took gold with Theo Krielen, Sam Rush, Jack Schicker, Hamish Barclay and Steve Pipe, followed by Waihi Beach and Sunset Beach crews in second and third respectively.
The New Zealand Surf Boat Teams and Team Manager will be confirmed and announced next week.
The next event in the series, the North Island Surf Boat Championships, will take place from February 7-8, with the final event, the Piha Big Wave Classic, on February 21.
