Omanu wins BOP junior surf title

Monday, 21 December 2015

Around 400 junior surf athletes put on top performances at Waihi Beach yesterday for the 2015 Bay of Plenty Junior Championships.

Omanu finished top of the club points table after a full day of racing, 38 points ahead of Papamoa (143) and Mount Maunganui came in third on 139 points.

The remaining club points saw Waihi Beach on 93, Whakatane 66, Whangamata 23 and Pukehina 1.

Surf Life Saving Eastern Region Sport Manager Mark Inglis says it was an awesome day's racing from all of the participants.

"Thank you very much to all the athletes who gave it their all, the parents who supported them, the Officials who gave their time to make sure we can run events like this and the water safety crew for keeping everyone safe, he says.

"These events are a great way for our junior athletes to get a taste of the competition scene and they gave it their all."

Mr Inglis says a special thank you must go to the over 40 Waihi Beach club members who worked away in the background and assisted with setting up, running results, life guarding and catering. "You made for a very successful BOP Junior Champs," he says.
