New Zealand crews to be named at Whangamata Surf Boat Spectacular

Wednesday, 30 December 2015

Around 46 crews and 230 competitors will join holiday makers in the popular holiday hotspot Whangamata on Saturday for the second round of the New Zealand Surf Boat Series.

Not only will the event bring the usual close, exhilarating racing but the New Zealand and New Zealand Development crews will also be announced for the 2016 ASRL Open in New South Wales in February.

The first round of the Surf Boat Series, held at Lyall Bay last month, doubled as the first selection event.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand will be selecting one Open Men's crew and one Open Women's crew on Saturday at the conclusion of racing.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand Sport Manager Mike Lord says this weekend's event will show who really wants that New Zealand selection.

"Our crews have trained hard all winter for a shot at not only taking out the NZ Surf Boat Series, but also gaining New Zealand selection.

"We look forward to making the team announcements on Saturday," he says.

Racing kicks-off at 10am on Saturday.
