25-strong Kiwi team to take on Aussie pool champs

A 25-strong Kiwi team is set to take on the Aussie pool champs on the Gold Coast on the weekend.

The annual National Pool Rescue Championships will take place from August 7-9 at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

Twenty four of the 25 registered athletes are in Surf Life Saving New Zealand's High Performance Squads.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand Sport Manager Mike Lord says the group of athletes are all incredibly strong swimmers. "We are likely to see some fast and exhilarating racing between them and the Australian competitors," he says.

Eleven of the 25 Kiwis taking part in the Aussie pool champs will also be competing at the International Surf Rescue Challenge (ISRC) in Australia in September.

Six of them, including Max Beattie (Omanu), Chris Dawson (Midway), Adam Simpson (Mt Maunganui), Cory Taylor (Midway), Devon Halligan (Midway) and Natalie Peat (Papamoa) are in the New Zealand Open team.

The remaining five, including Matthew Scott (Midway), Hamish Miller (Mt Maunganui) Maia Bryant (Papamoa), Kelsi Boocock (Red Beach) and Baydon Botha (Mairangi Bay) are in the New Zealand Youth team.

The athletes will race individually for their clubs before teaming up for some national teams' races in the relay events. This will assist with their preparations for the New Zealand Pool Championships in October and the German Cup in November.

New Zealand team manager Mark Weatherall says after a great outing for the New Zealand Squad at last month's Sanyo Cup in Japan, the weekend will give the pool athletes an opportunity to test themselves as we look to take another step towards Rescue 2016.

"We are looking at taking a strong team to the German Cup later in the year so this weekend will give our coaches and the NZ selectors an opportunity to look at results before the New Zealand Pool Championships in October," he says.
