Cadbury rolls out 25,000 Jaffas for SLSNZ

Tuesday, 8 July 2014

Surf Life Saving New Zealand has joined forces with Cadbury to run 25,000 Jaffas down Dunedin's Baldwin Street at the famous Jaffa Race this month.

The event usually consists of two races, run to benefit The Parents Centre and Make-A-Wish, but Cadbury has this year added a third race to support Surf Life Saving New Zealand.

Cadbury New Zealand Managing Director, Alastair de Raadt, believes the more money they can raise the better. "Year after year the Dunedin Cadbury Chocolate Carnival helps us raise thousands of dollars for charities and attract tourism to Dunedin. It's great to be able to put on a fun and iconic event that also gives back to the community, and Surf Life Saving New Zealand is a very worth recipient of the  proceeds of our third race," said Alastair.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand Southern Regional Manager Stu Bryce says around 50 members from local Surf Life Saving Clubs have been labelling, by hand, 25,000 Jaffas with printed numbers and selling the corresponding tickets around the community. "It has been an exciting event for our members to be involved with and we're so grateful that all the money raised from the sale of each ticket will  directly benefit our local Surf Life Saving Clubs," he said.

Since the race's inception over $500,000 has been raised for local charities including Cure Kids, Canteen, Dunedin Kindergarten Association, The Malcam Charitable Trust, The Otago Community Hospice, primary schools throughout Otago and Southland and nationally through Parents Centre NZ Inc. and Make-A-Wish.

The Cadbury Jaffa Race kicks off at 11am on Friday July 18 with singer and Surf Life Saving ambassador Jamie McDell entertaining the crowds between races. The Jaffa Race is the culmination of the week long Dunedin Cadbury Chocolate Carnival which runs from the July 12-18. Highlights for the 2014 Dunedin Cadbury Chocolate Carnival include the ever popular Crunchie Train ride, the Cadbury  Couture Fashion Show and the Chef's Table Dinner hosted by foodies Michael Coughlin and Julie Buiso.
