Emotional win for Omanu

A rampant Omanu team sealed a slice of history, running away with the overall title at the Oceans 14 New Zealand under-14 surf lifesaving championships today.

It's the first time in the 14-year history of the event that Omanu has tasted overall victory and they did it in style on the final day with all the team contributing.

Sprinter Flynn Kelly was involved in two of the four final-day golds Omanu picked up, winning the under-14 beach sprint and anchoring the 2km beach relay success, and said the overall win was a sweet feeling.

"It came down to a mix between plenty of hard work, a great team spirit and also a pretty cruisey attitude," Kelly said.  "We really concentrated on enjoying ourselves over the four days and winning the club title was almost secondary to that."

His teammate Ella Pollock, at her fourth consecutive Oceans carnival with one more to come next year, said it was a great way to pay tribute to 11-year-old clubmate Harrison Mundy, who passed away last week.

"We did it for Harrison just as much as we did it for ourselves," Pollock, who backed up her first-day beach flags win with board race victory today, said.  "We talked about it as a team and that meant a lot to us."

Omanu finished on 60 points, 12 clear of neighbours Mount Maunganui, with Red Beach and Papamoa third-equal on 42.

Mairangi Bay jumped to fifth on 35 points, thanks in no small way to one of their smallest competitors, Astaria Te Aukura, who picked up four golds in the under-11 ranks.

She showed incredible variety, taking out the beach flags, diamond race, board race and surf race.

Fitzroy siblings Zac and Sacha Reid helped their club to seventh, winning the under-14 boys and under-12 girls surf race finals within minutes of each other.  The Taranaki club also notched a bit of history, with Zac Reid joining Abby Collins, Cameron Dowsing, Corben Le Breton, Maisie Lundon Moore and Natalie Walsh to win the event-ending under-14 Grand Cameron relay.

Orewa's Grace Kaihau won the under-14 surf race and diamond race, while New Plymouth Old Boys 12-year-old Sam Dingle won the diamond and board races and was second in the surf race.

Among the smaller clubs, Lochlainn O'Connor took out the under-13 surf race for Waihi Beach, Spencer Park's Brad Austin won the under-13 beach sprint and Whakatane's Lauren Henry won the under-14 beach flags/sprint double.
