Swim skills help Boon to IRB goldSaturday, 7 December 2013
Maddie Boon showed the benefit of years of ironwoman training as she helped claim gold on the first day of surf lifesaving's North Island IRB championships in Papamoa today.
The 23-year-old, in her first season in the inflatable rescue craft, paired with driver Katherine Reardon and patient Hannah Gibson to help Muriwai claim the women's tube rescue title in tricky 1.5m surf at the Bay of Plenty beach.
Muriwai got off to an unsteady start off the beach in the tube rescue final, which sees crews head out through the break zone to a buoy, where the crewperson dives in and swims to a patient, clips them into a rescue tube and swims back to the boat. Boon's huge swim reeled in Papamoa and Sunset Beach and Muriwai cruised home for a comfortable win.
Home beach advantage proved decisive in the premier tube rescue final, where Tomee Berthelsen and Liam Smith edged out Paekakariki's Dwight Garton and Tyler Mills, with Mitch Brady and Troy Walsh grabbing bronze for the second Papamoa crew.
Sunset Beach's Samuel Dwen and Shane Edwards grabbed double gold in the senior division, edging out Papamoa and Mairangi Bay in the tube rescue and benefiting from a costly Waimarama error in the mass rescue final, when Waimarama's Rhys Harman ran to the wrong finishing gate. Harman quickly realised his mistake and scrambled home for bronze, behind Papamoa.
Westshore and Opunake shared the spoils in the under-21 division, with racing for the day cut short when a large mass of sea lettuce floated into the competition arena.
