Waioeka Gorge closure

Monday, 5 March 2012

The New Zealand Transport Authority are advising that the Waioeka Gorge section of State Highway 2 between Opotiki and Gisborne could be closed for up to a month after a major slip on Saturday. This will affect all drivers travelling from the North to Gisborne next week for the State New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships.

An alternative route for smaller vehicles - the Old Motu Coach Rd between Opotiki and Matawai - has also been closed by a slip.

Drivers are advised to use alternative routes either through SH5 Taupo or SH35 around the East Cape, and to visit the NZTA website www.nzta.govt.nz for updates on the Gorge and other highways information.

We strongly recommend that any gear trailers take the Taupo Napier route as the Coast route is very narrow with limited fuel available.

This will add significant driving times to all vehicles travelling from the north to Gisborne so please ensure you check the NZTA website regularly right up until the time you leave as they will have the latest information on the status of all routes.
