Event review changes by event

Background

At the end of last season a range of event surveys were completed across Surf Life Saving New Zealand national events. All local sport committees also completed a review of national, regional and local events. This information was used by the National Sport Committee (NSC) and nominated Surf Officials to complete a review of SLSNZ national events to identify improvements for next season. A workshop was held in Wellington last month and a range of changes were agreed on and a number of event working groups created to determine final event and programme details.

Below is a summary of the key changes agreed to as a result of this review process and an outline of how and when final event details will be released. The National Sport Committee would like to thank all members who contributed to the event review through event surveys and local sport committees.

State New Zealand Pool Championships, Wellington, 5 -7 October 2012

Key changes

  1. The event will start at midday on Friday 
  2. Under 14 age groups will be aligned across all SLSNZ national events with the minimum competitor age to be 10 years of age
  3. A NSC working group will finalise the event programme

Next steps

A National Sport Committee working group will finalise event programme with an expected release date of Friday 29 June.

Lion Foundation New Zealand Surf League, Mount Maunganui, 9 - 10 February 2013

Key changes

  1. Two day competition (Saturday, Sunday)
  2. Under-14 competitors will not be included in the event
  3. The event will include under-16, under-19 and open competitors, these may be separate or integrated teams, a NSC working group will determine final event format
  4. Eight NZ provincial teams plus one international will be invited to compete in the event
  5. NSC working group is also reviewing the inclusion of  IRBs, canoes and surf boats

Next steps

A National Sport Committee working group will finalise event format and programme with an expected release date of Friday 27 July.

U14 NZ Surf Life Saving Championships (Oceans'13), Mount Maunganui, 21 -24 Feb 2013

State NZ Surf Life Saving Championships, Mount Maunganui, 7-10 March 2013

Key changes

  1. No major changes to this event
  2. NSC working group is reviewing the inclusion of new events based on feedback provided and will develop a final event programme
  3. Commitment to increasing the atmosphere of the event

BP Surf Rescue Championships, Waipu Cove, 22-24 March 2013

Key changes

  1. No major changes to this event
  2. An IRB working group will be consulted with on event improvements

New Zealand Surf Boat Series

Key changes

  1. No major changes to this event
  2. Series venues and dates will be released as soon as they are confirmed
  3. The Surf Boat Advisory Committee will review the alignment of age groups to consider if women should also be under-19, under-23 and open
  4. The Surf Boat Advisory Committee will be consulted with on series improvements
  5. Improve the consistency and alignment between the three national series (Surf Boats, IRBs, Race Series)

The series programme will be released by Friday 31 August.

BP Surf Rescue Series

Key changes

  1. No major changes to this event
  2. Series venues and dates will be released as soon as they are re-confirmed
  3. An IRB working group will be consulted with on series improvements
  4. Improve the consistency and alignment between the three national series (Surf Boats, IRBs, Race Series)

Next steps

The series programme will be released by Friday 31 August.

Sonic Race Series

Key changes

  1. Improvements to series points format
  2. Increased series promotion and coverage
  3. Series venues and dates will be released as soon as they are confirmed
  4. Improve the consistency and alignment between the three national series (Surf Boats, IRBs, Race Series)
