Course Overview
The Junior Surf Group Leader Course is an entry level development opportunity for SLSNZ members interested in taking on more responsibility in supporting delivery or leading Junior Surf sessions. Junior Surf supports the development of 8,000 young people and their whānau each summer and is run by SLSNZ clubs, providing many opportunities for new and existing members of all ages.
Course Information
Pre-requisites:
- 16 years of age
- Current member of a SLS club
- Be Safer Module (online)
- Recommended: Safeguarding Children Module (online) & Surf Lifeguard Award
We encourage younger members ages 14 & 15 years who are interested in Junior Surf to help as active age group helpers, assistants, skill demonstrator or if qualified, water safety. This will provide them with the necessary hands-on experience prior to turning 16 years of age.
Duration: 5 hrs + online pre learning
Delivered by: Regional SLSNZ accredited facilitators
Online Pre-learning: The self-directed Junior Surf Group Leader online pre-learning must be completed prior to attending the face to face course. This online module consists of a series of learning activities including knowledge checks.
Who should complete it: Any SLSNZ members leading or helping deliver Junior Surf programmes at clubs.
Candidate requirements: Fully participate in the course and complete the course workbook.

Outcomes
At the completion of the course candidates will be able to:
- Understand the purpose of Junior Surf and its role within SLSNZ clubs.
- Be familiar with the SLSNZ Junior Surf resources and how to utilise them in different Junior Surf programme styles.
- Understand how to use a participant centred leadership style, while applying the Junior Surf Guiding Principles.
- Develop a range of skills and techniques to support delivery of sessions in an outdoor environment.
- Be aware of tools, NSOPs, and best practice models of risk management for carrying out practical Junior Surf activities.
- Have the confidence & competence to deliver age-appropriate junior surf sessions safely.
