The Whakakatane Surf Lifesaving Club is based at Ohope Beach in the Bay of Plenty. In 2008 the Club celebrated its 75th Anniversary and today still is an integral part of the beach, Whakatane town and the district.

Ohope Beach is patrolled on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 30 November 2019 to 22 March 2020. Whakatane volunteer lifeguards patrol from 11:00am to 4:00pm on Saturdays and 10:00am to 4:00pm on Sundays from 30 November 2019 to 15 December 2019. Hours are extended to 10:00am to 5:00pm all weekend from 16 December 2019 to 27 January 2020. From 28 January 2020 to 22 March 2020 lifeguards patrol from 11:00am to 5:00pm on Saturdays and 10:00am to 4:00pm on Sundays. A Regional Lifeguard Service operates from 10:00am to 6:00pm from 23 December 2019 to 24 January 2020.
