It's one of the oldest national championships in this country and this year, the State New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships return to Mount Maunganui for a four-day carnival.

Sumner's Steven Parrat and George Thomas dominated the premier division at the final round of the BP Surf Rescue series in Dunedin, though St Kilda claimed the overall club title at the event which doubles as the South Island IRB championships.
