SLSNZ Peer Support Training - Applications Open
SLSNZ is rolling out a peer support training to Eastern, Southern and Central region from October to early December (Northern Region applications have closed for 2021 and courses will be scheduled early 2022). The two-day training will consist of psychological first aid and lifeguard peer support training. The goal for SLSNZ is to have one or two peer supporters at every club throughout the country. The training will be delivered by the National Wellbeing Lead, Ari Peach.
A refresher opportunity will be available for Eastern Region members who attended the last peer support training in 2019 (please get in touch with your CDO if this is you).
What is a peer supporter?
Peer Supporters are specially trained SLSNZ members who can provide support to their fellow members (peers) on a range of issues including mental health concerns, bullying, stress and traumatic lifesaving incidents. Peer supporters play an important role in post-incident support and may be called on to attend post-incident debriefs and assist with following up members that have been involved in traumatic incidents. A crucial part of the peer support role is to be able to link members with the support they need to manage their wellbeing.
What are the pre-requisites?
We are looking for members that have a strong desire to support their peers in surf lifesaving and have demonstrated that they are trustworthy and approachable. SLSNZ will provide you all the training to be a qualified peer supporter so no formal mental health qualifications are needed to apply.
Formal pre-requisites are:
- 18 years of age
- Restricted Motor Vehicle License
- SLS Member
- Police vetted (or have begun the process prior to course commencement)
Desirable but not essential
- Refreshed Surf Lifeguard
- Refreshed Patrol Support
If selected to attend the training, participants must complete safeguarding children online learning module prior to attending the training weekend.
A written endorsement will also be required from club chair or delegate.
Due to limited places on each course, Club Development Officers in each region will make the final selections to meet operational requirements.
