Outward Bound Programmes

What is Outward Bound?

Outward Bound is an adventure-based experience located in Anakiwa, Marlborough Sounds, that uses the outdoors to challenge participants mentally and physically. People from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, abilities and ages attend Outward Bound.

The aim of Outward Bound is to build relationships with community organisations whose mission aligns with that of Outward Bound, and to support them in helping their community; Outward Bound's mission being "better people, better communities, better world".

Ngaru Huhuka Programme

This is an excellent opportunity for surf lifesaving members to improve their leadership skills, as well as create relationships and connections across clubs and regions throughout NZ. This new programme formulates part of our leadership pathway with a cross over into our flagship leadership development programme, bp Leaders for Life.

Ngaru Huhuka is a metaphor for ‘the foaming wave’. Surf lifesaving course participants represent one wave of the ocean when they arrive at Outward Bound. They are a source of energy that has got them to this point.

During the course, they build momentum and like a wave they build up energy, peak and the foaming wave breaks as the course ends.

They in turn can take the “foam” (their learnings and experiences) from the course and share the development with other surf lifesaving members and their club. Just like swell lines, each year will bring a new ‘foaming wave’ of surf lifesaving course participants attend the Ngaru Huhuka programme.

This collaboration between Outward Bound and SLSNZ is a unique opportunity dedicated solely to SLSNZ members only.
