From its inception in 2004 with its first 300 swimmers, the State King of the Bays event has grown to 1600 happy swimmers - demonstrating a huge amount of loyalty and interest in the event across all swimming abilities.
Its popularity is also no surprise given the stunning scenery and atmosphere created around the event in the lifestyle-focused communities of Takapuna and Milford.
The King of the Bays was the founding event over a decade ago in what has become New Zealand's most popular ocean swim series. The King of the Bays usually attracts the largest field of swimmers from beginners keen to Give it a Go over 300m, to those ready to Step it Up to 1km and the 'big guns' taking on the 2.8km distance.
This is also one of the five events in our series that offers a dedicated kids event over 200m- aptly titled the State OceanKids. As the Series decider there is always huge anticipation as the long distance swimmers head out from Milford Beach and cross the finish line at Takapuna.
Iconic Rangitoto Island acts as backdrop for what has become one of the highlights of New Zealand's sporting calendars.
