The Bay of Islands is often described as the 'jewel in New Zealand's crown' so what better excuse for a weekend away than taking part in the State Bay of Islands Classic.
There's three distances to choose from including the popular State OceanKids 200m swim which offers youngsters from 6 - 10 years a fun and safe introduction to ocean swimming under the ever watchful eye of volunteers from Surf Life Saving New Zealand (who are present at all events in our series).
For those who are finding their 'swim legs' the 300m distance offers a gentle, yet challenging swim. With tidal restraints limiting the ability to stage a 1km course, the longer distance for more competent swimmers is the 3.3km from Russell to Paihia.
Once you have conquered the State Bay of Islands Classic there's a wealth of amazing activities to take part in this beautiful part of the world and yes that even includes swimming with dolphins!
