The St Clair Surf Life Saving Club member will lead the reigning world champions to France for Rescue 2014.

It will be the second time McMillan has acted as team captain- he also led the team to victory in Adelaide at Rescue 2012.

New Zealand Team Coach Scott Bartlett says McMillan was selected for the role because he is the most experienced athlete within the team (having been to three previous Worlds events) as well as the leadership skills he brings to the team.

Papamoa SLSC's Ben Johnston will act as the team captain for the New Zealand Youth Team.

The 2014 New Zealand Pool Championships doubled as a send-off for New Zealand's surf lifesaving teams who depart for France on September 8.

Members of the New Zealand Team were presented with a framed blazer pocket and the NZ Youth Team was presented with their team polo shirts.

During the weekend, the athletes are racing individually for their own clubs as well as teaming up for some national teams' races in the relay events to assist with their preparations for Rescue 2014.

The Black Fins, along with the New Zealand Youth Team, will compete in the National Team's competition from September 16-21 at the Lifesaving World Championships which runs from September 13-26.
