Surf Life Saving Wellington has the primary role of linking the national organisation to the clubs. In coordinating surf life saving activity within Wellington the region takes responsibility for ensuring the specific needs of both the membership within the region and the public desire for beach safety are being catered to.
An association, called “The Wellington Surf Bathers Council”, was founded in Wellington in 1917. This lapsed and was re-formed in 1919 as “The Wellington Surf Association”. When the current structure of recognised District Surf Life Saving Associations was developed the Wellington District was formed on October 2nd 1932.
The heart and soul of surf life saving in Wellington is the 1000 members belonging to the 7 clubs. In the 2006 / 2007 season lifeguards in Wellington completed 8,500 lifeguard hours, completed 4,200 preventative actions (involving more than 7,500 people), responded to 61 first aids, 7 searches and saved 145 lives.
Wellington is a unique cosmopolitan city with a large population and rugged yet accessible coastline. Wellington is a member of Surf Life Saving New Zealand. The national organisation provides leadership and coordination of lifesaving activity within New Zealand. Wellington plays an important role in both shaping and implementing national strategies within the regional environment.
